Getting out of a post race slump

I’ve been in a bit of a running slump lately. I wanted to take it easy after the marathon and recovery correctly, so I stuck to a reverse tapering plan. It worked. I’ve recovered and I’m still feeling good – physically. But mentally, I’m a little bored.

I’m a distance runner. I’m not a sprinter. I really don’t hit my stride until three miles in. Since the Houston Marathon I hadn’t run farther than 6 miles and I was starting to have trouble believing that just a month ago I had run 26.2.

Getting out of a post-race slump

So I decided this weekend would be it. I would break out of my sub-6 mile slump with an 8 miler. It wasn’t pretty. I wasn’t prepared for the 96% humidity. (I know the rest of the country is buried under snow, but Houston didn’t get the memo that it’s February.) But I did it.

After my run, I headed to Big Yoga for a 90 minutes of power yoga (accompanied by live music!). Doing the two workouts back to back always makes me feel strong. I don’t do it too often, but I have a few days left in the 40 Days challenge, so no excuses. I finished off everything with a brunch of eggs, wheat toast and fruit, while watching the latest episode of “How to Get Away With Murder” (just one of my many guilty pleasure TV shows).

Post-run breakfast

All in all a pretty good start to Sunday.
